Football player, lawyer.
Born at Winnipeg on 2 May 1926, elder of two sons of Harold Bernard Irving (1904-1978) and Daisy Willdey (1905-1980), he graduated from Kelvin High School (1943) and received Arts (1947) and Law (1950) degrees from the University of Manitoba. Called to the Manitoba Bar in 1951, he articled with Norman Joyce D’Arcy then practiced with the firm that eventually became D'Arcy and Deacon.
On 9 June 1951, he married Velma Jean “Val” Sherman (1924-2005, daughter of George W. Sherman) at St. George's Anglican Church. They had no children. In 2011, he married Peggy. He served as President of the Manitoba Bar Association (1971-1972), a Bencher of the Law Society of Manitoba (1965-1971, 1972-?), and President of the Southwood Golf and Country Club (1965-1966). He played with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1945-1950) and later refereed games in the Canadian Football League. He was a member of the Masons and Shriners.
In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977).
He died at Winnipeg on 7 September 2024.
