The Southwood Golf and Country Club is a direct descendent of the Winnipeg Golf Club (also known as the Norwood Golf Course), established in 1894, and as such is recognized by the Royal Canadian Golf Association as the oldest 18-hole golf course in Manitoba.
In the early 1900s, the Winnipeg Hunt Club was formed. However, when it disbanded in 1915, a new organization called the Winnipeg Hunt Golf Club moved in and built a nine-hole golf course. The course was operated until 1919 when its members amalgamated with a few members of the Norwood Golf Club to form the Southwood Golf Club in 1921. The club purchased land near the Manitoba Agricultural College and, with the help of designer Willie Park Jr., a golf course layout was born. In 1925, Stanley Thompson redesigned the course. In 1956, the club was reincorporated to become the Southwood Golf and Country Club.
With the growth of the University of Manitoba and the resulting lack of space for expansion, riverbank erosion, and increased traffic, led to discussions to build a new golf course elsewhere. In 2007, the club was able to purchase land in St. Norbert and a Canadian golf course architect Thomas McBroom created an 18-hole layout along the LaSalle River. The course opened for play in July 2011.
In January 2008, the University of Manitoba purchased the former golf course property and, once the new course was playable, took possession of the land for future expansion of the university campus. That work began in 2023.
