The corporate entity known as Manitoba Pool started in January 1924 as the Manitoba Co-operative Wheat Producers Limited. In May 1929, it was renamed the Manitoba Wheat Pool under which it operated until declaring bankruptcy in 1932. Its assets were assumed by a former subsidiary, Manitoba Pool Elevators, which had been incorporated on 9 April 1925.
Through the years, Manitoba Pool acquired country elevators from other grain firms, starting with Western Canada Flour Mills (1940), Alliance Grain Company (1948), and Reliance Grain Company (20 elevators, 1948). In October 1959, it purchased 86 country elevators in Manitoba from Ogilvie Flour Mills and its subsidiary, Lake of the Woods Milling Company at a cost of $1,324,000, adding about 4,000,000 bushels of capacity to its elevator storage space. It sold 72 of these elevators to local associations. The company’s participation in the 1972 purchase of Federal Grain brought it 67 more country elevators in Manitoba, bringing its total complement to 381. It bought nine country elevators from the Scottish Co-operative Society in 1973.
In 1998, Manitoba Pool merged with its counterpart in Alberta, the Alberta Wheat Pool, to form Agricore Cooperative Limited. Among its subsidiaries, affiliates, and joint ventures were Alberta Industrial Mustard Company, Canadian Pool Agencies, CanAmerica Foods, Cascadia Terminal Joint Venture, Demeter (1993) Inc., Heartland Livestock Services, Interprovincial Cooperative, Lloydminster Joint Venture, Pacific Elevators, Pool Insurance, Prairie Mountain Agri, Prairie Sun Grains, Prairie West Terminals, Prince Rupert Grain, RADSS Technologies, SM Prairie Management, Sweetgrass Joint Venture, Western Co-operative Fertilizers, Western Pool Terminals, XCAN Grain Pool, and The Manitoba Co-operator newspaper.
On 1 November 2001, Agricore merged with United Grain Growers to form Agricore United which, in 2007, was taken over by the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. This publicly traded corporation, known as Viterra, operated until 2013 when it was purchased by Glencore International.
A large collection of corporate records for Manitoba Pool Elevators, for the period from 1924 to 1998, is held at the S. J. McKee Archives in Brandon. Additional records from the Agricore and Agricore United periods of its history can be found at the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections.
