Memorable Manitobans: Sidney Warhaft (1921-1976)

Educator, professor.

Born at Winnipeg on 8 December 1921, one of four children of ? Warhaft and Bertha Glassman, he received a primary and secondary education at Luxton School and St. John's High School, graduating as valedictorian from the latter (1939). After attending the Central Normal School (1940-1941), he taught at Clydebank School (1941-1942) before enlisting in the Canadian military and serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force (1942-1945). After his military discharge, he taught at Spencer South School (1947).

He received a BA Honours degree, majoring in English and French, from the University of Manitoba (1949) and an MA degree from Northwestern University (1952). After receiving a Canadian Government Overseas scholarship, he attended The Sorbonne at Paris and later received a PhD degree in English Literature from Northwestern University (1954). After holding Assistant Professorships in English at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and University of Southern California, he returned to Winnipeg in 1958 to join the academic staff of the University of Manitoba. He rose to become Head of its English Department.

On 21 January 1953, he married Marion Glassman at Paris, France. They had a son.

He died suddenly at Winnipeg on 28 September 1976 and was buried in the Rosh Pine Memorial Park. He is commemorated by the Sidney Warhaft Memorial Prize at the University of Manitoba.
