Memorable Manitobans: Lewis Edwin “Lew” Walker (c1910-1968)

Educator.

Son of T. E. Walker of Swan River, he received BSc, BEd, and MEd degrees from the University of Manitoba. He taught at Ewart School (1929-1930) and served as the Principal of Beulah School (1930-1934). In 1937, he joined the teaching staff of the Winnipeg School Division and taught at Aberdeen School (1937-1940), Gordon Bell School (1941-1951), and Andrew Mynarski School (1961-1962).

Then was then Vice Principal of Isaac Brock School (1951-1953) and Principal of Inkster School (1953-1955), David Thompson School (1955-1958), Aberdeen School (1958-1961), and Sisler High School (1962-1968). He served as Secretary (1946-1949) and President (1959-1960) of the Manitoba Educational Association, and Vice-President of the Elmwood Branch of the YMCA.

On 30 March 1929, he married Elizabeth Mary McMunn (?-?) of Ewart at the St. James Anglican Church. They had three children: Lewis Edwin Walker, Gene Walker, and Clara Walker (wife of W. Karakuc). He was a member of the Masons (Fidelity Lodge), Elmwood Lions Club, and Strathcona Curling Club, served on the board for Victoria General Hospital, and organized the Junior Orioles Baseball Team.

He died at his Winnipeg home, 95 Lenore Street, on 9 March 1968 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. His honorary pallbearers were F. A. Anderson, R. Gray, G. Mark, R. Bend, D. Walker, H. J. Benningen, and J. Beer.
