Harry Schellenberg

Educator, MLA (1993-1995), MLA (1999-2003), MLA (2003-2007).
Born on a farm near Boissevain on 25 May 1939, he attended the Mennonite Collegiate Institute at Gretna then the Manitoba Teachers' College before becoming a teacher. He taught at rural schools near Homewood, Melita School (1965-1966), Carman, and Morden while taking night and summer courses to obtain BA, BEd, and MEd degrees from the University of Manitoba. He taught history at River East Collegiate for 25 years and several more years participating in a visitation program at the Stony Mountain Penitentiary.
Elected in a 1993 by-election to the provincial Legislative Assembly as an New Democratic Party member for the Rossmere constituency, he was defeated by Victor Toews in the subsequent general election of 1995. He was President of the New Democratic Party of Manitoba (1997-1999) prior to being re-elected in the 1999 and 2003 elections, during which period he served for a time as Deputy Speaker of the House. He was not a candidate in the 2007 general election.
In 1975, he married Irene Heidebrecht and they lived in North Kildonan, having a son and a daughter. They were members of the Douglas Mennonite Church. He was the founding President of the Manitoba Parents for German Education and, in 1981, helped to bring the German bilingual program to the River East School Division. In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002).
He died at his Winnipeg home on 20 November 2024 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
