Memorable Manitobans: Paul Moroz (1926-2023)

Educator.

Born on 22 February 1926, one of 12 children of Ivan “John” Moroz (1891-1961) and Anastasia “Nettie” Dumanski (1897-1961), and sibling of fellow educator Henry Andrew Moroz, he grew up near Cloverleaf, attended grades one through 11 at Cloverleaf School (1934-1944), and became a permit teacher during the Second World War. His first classroom posting was at Devon School (1944-1945), after which he completed grade 12 at Isaac Newton High School (1944-1945), followed with attendance at Manitoba Teachers’ College, and teaching at Lydiatt School (?-?), Minnedosa School District (?-?), Corrall School / Corrall School No. 1 (1947-1952), and Pointe Du Bois School / John G. Glassco School (1954-1957, Principal).

In 1957, he joined the staff of the East Kildonan School District, succeeding his brother Henry as Vice-Principal of Polson School (1957-1960) / Polson School (1960-1962, 1965-1968), and in between Vice-Principal tenures in the 1960s, he taught at Munroe Junior High School (1963-1965) while attending both evening and summer classes at the University of Manitoba. There, he earned BSc (1963) and BEd (1965) degrees and, while on campus, first met Anne Rucki, whom he married on 8 July 1961 at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Transcona. He concluded his career in education as Vice-Principal of Salisbury School (1968-1983), after which he retired.

He died at Concordia Place Personal Care Home in Winnipeg on 1 January 2023.
