Educator, cleric.
Born at Mears on 30 May 1926, one of thirteen children of Ukrainian immigrants Anastasia and Alec Kohuch, he began teaching at the age of 17 years and later received a teachers’ certificate and university degrees. He taught for many years, including service at Cowan River School (1946) and Principalships at Kirkfield Park School (1962-1963), Crestview School (1963-1976), Bedson School (1980-1982), Heritage School (?-?), and Voyageur School (1976-1980) in the St. James Assiniboia School Division. He retired from teaching in 1986.
A founding member of St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in St. James, in 1982 he was ordained as a church deacon, serving at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church, Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, and St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. While teaching at Garland School in 1950, he met fellow teacher Mary Wasyliuk (1930-2012) and married her on 24 May 1951, eventually having five children, including Garry N. Kohuch.
He died at Winnipeg on 17 December 2015 and was buried in the Holy Family Cemetery.
