Before this school in the St. James area of Winnipeg was constructed, classes were held in the Kirkfield Park School building in the Kirkfield Park School District. Designed by the Winnipeg architectural firm of Pratt Lindgren Snider Tomcej and Associates, the new school opened on 6 February 1967 with a staff of nine teachers and 234 students. A official opening ceremony was held on 4 October 1967. Student enrollment climbed to 460 in 1968 and over 700 in the 1970s.
