Memorable Manitobans: Kjartan Ingimundur “Kjartie” Johnson (1910-1992)

Physician.

Born near Lundar on 14 October 1910, son of ? Johnson and Oddfridur Thordarson, he attended Nordur Stjarna School and Lundar High School, moving after graduation to Winnipeg so he could take medical training. After two years of pre-Medicine at the University of Manitoba, he enrolled in the Manitoba Medical College and graduated in 1937.

He practiced general medicine at Gimli (1939-1950) and Pine Falls (1950-1964) then lived on a farm near Gladstone (1964-1990) while working as a Medical Health Officer at Neepawa and Portage la Prairie. He moved to Winnipeg in 1990.

He was President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1962-1963). He served on the boards of the Health Sciences Centre and Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation. He was given life membership in the Manitoba College of Physicians and Surgeons (1975) and Canadian Medical Association (1978).

On 11 February 1939, he married nurse Dorothy Morton (1913-2001, daughter of William Morton) at Winnipeg and they had two daughters and a son. He was a member of the Masons (Selkirk, Pine Falls, and Gladstone lodges), Khartum Shriners, and Gimli Kinsmen Club.

He died at Winnipeg on 25 September 1992 and was buried in the Gladstone Cemetery.
