Memorable Manitobans: William Oliver Hamilton (1875-1924)

Educator, lawyer.

Born at Scarborough, Ontario on 2 December 1875, son of James Hamilton and Isabella Glendinning, brother of Thomas Glendenning Hamilton, he moved with his family to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1883. At the age of 15, he came to Winnipeg where he attended the Winnipeg Collegiate Institute, Central Normal School, and University of Manitoba, graduating from the latter with an Arts degree in 1902.

He taught school for five years, including at Beausejour School (1904), before articling in law with the firm of Daly and Company for four and a half years. In December 1911, he formed a law partnership with Ebenezer Beveridge in the firm of Beveridge and Hamilton and, in 1916, was a partner in the firm Broad and Hamilton. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church and Assiniboine Golf Club.

He died unmarried at his Winnipeg home, 268 Carlton Street, on 3 December 1924 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
