Memorable Manitobans: William Chimchak (1902-1981)


Born in the Komarno-Zbruch area on 29 August 1902, son of Stanley Chimchak (1875-1945) and Julia Chimchak (1878-1960), he attended Zbruch School, Teulon High School, and Wesley College. Following teacher training, he worked in rural Manitoba classrooms for 40 years, including at Jaroslaw School (1920-1921), Adam School (1921), Plum Ridge School (1926-1928 & 1930-1933, Principal), Leeland School (1933-1937), Meleb School (1937-1943, Principal 1937-1942), Berlo Bismark School (?-?), and Gimli Composite School (?-1965), after which he retired. He was a member of the Komarno Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, serving as its Secretary (15 years) and Cantor. On 22 September 1934, he married fellow teacher (of 38 years) Wanda A. Boboski (1909-1989) in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood and had one son, Bill. He died at the Hunter Memorial Hospital in Teulon on 13 December 1981 and was buried in the St. Stephen’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery.
