John Beattie “Ian” Sutherland
|
Physician, radiologist.
Born at Cultus Lake, British Columbia on 21 April 1932, son of George William Sutherland (1901-1991) and Annie Ethylwynne “Winnie” Nicholson (1896-1965), he learned sign language at an early age because both of his parents were deaf. Family employment brought them to Winnipeg where he grew up in the Wolseley neighbourhood and attended Mulvey School and Gordon Bell High School. After secondary graduation, he attended United College, receiving baccalaureate and masters degrees in Physics. He then turned to Medicine, receiving a Doctor of Medicine in 1960.
After a short period in the Department of Physiology at the University of Manitoba with surgeon Joseph Doupe, he worked for Atomic Energy of Canada at Deep River, Ontario (1960-1962) and Pinawa (1962-1964), advising on the biological effects of radiation, before returning to the University of Manitoba in 1964 to join the Diagnostic Radiology Unit. He was later involved in clinical and administrative work, serving as Head of the Section of Nuclear Medicine, Head of the Department of Radiology, and Vice-President (Medicine) of the Health Sciences Centre. He was Chairman of the Canadian Association of Radiologists and President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1986-1987). After retirement in 1997, he worked at Nuclear Medicine Consultants, a private clinic that he had founded earlier in his career, finally retiring in 2018.
On 23 December 1955, he married Eva Freko (1931-2016) at Winnipeg and they had three sons and a daughter, Karen Elaine Sutherland (1960-2016). He was a member of Young United Church.
He died at Winnipeg on 21 January 2025.
