Memorable Manitobans: Ann “Anna” Phillips (?-2000)

Educator.

Born in Winnipeg, daughter of Frederick Theodore “Fred” Phillips (c1894-1990) and Lena Skrentovich (c1898-1966), she attended the Central Normal School and later received BA (1959) and BEd (1960) degrees from the University of Manitoba. She worked initially in rural Manitoba, including at Briton School (1937-1938) and Moosehorn School (1938-1940).

In 1940, she joined the staff of the Winnipeg School District, teaching at Sir Sam Steele School (1940-1943), Champlain School (1943-1947), Lord Roberts School (1947-1954), as an exchange teacher at Glasgow, Scotland (1954-1955), David Livingstone School (1955-1958), Queenston School (1958-1963), and Grant Park High School (1963-1967). She next worked at Riverview-Ashland School as Teaching Vice-Principal [and the head administrator] of Ashland School (1967-1969), and was Principal of Sir John Franklin School (1969-1970), Grosvenor School (1970-1977), and Wolseley School (1977-1980). She was a member of the University Women’s Club of Winnipeg.

She died at the Victoria General Hospital on 22 July 2000.
