Memorable Manitobans: Abram W. “Abe” Friesen (1936-2020)

Educator.

Born at Kronsgart on 6 February 1936, son of Nick and Helena Friesen, his family moved to a farm near Elm Creek in 1950. After completing high school, he attended the Manitoba Normal School and began a teaching career at Boyne School before moving to Winnipeg where he completed BA and BEd degrees at the University of Manitoba. He spent 30 years in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division, serving as a teacher at Lincoln School (1963-1964), Vice-Principal, and Principal of Bedson School (1968-1980) and Voyageur School (1980-1996) before retirement in 1992. He married Marie Penner in 1962 and they had four children. He died at Winnipeg on 8 December 2020 and was buried in the Elm Creek Cemetery.
