Memorable Manitobans: George Edward Dangerfield (1863-1923)

Hotelier.

Born at Brockville, Ontario on 11 November 1863, as a young man he took up a homestead near Grafton, North Dakota. For a few months in 1884, he worked on a construction crew of the Canadian Pacific Railway between Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie but retained his farm until he moved to East Grand Forks, Minnesota. He sold the farm in 1903 and took over operation of the Grieg House at Grand Forks. Subsequently he owned and operated hotels at Prince Albert (Saskatchewan) and Bemidji (Minnesota). He farmed near Beulah from 1918 to 1920.

In 1921, he moved to Winnipeg and purchased the Leland Hotel from Eli Joel Rochon, operating it until his death, at the time of which he was President of the Manitoba Hotel Keepers’ Association.

In 1887, he married Jessie Ann Bricker (c1870-1959) at Grafton, North Dakota. They had three children: Frederick William “Fred” Dangerfield, James Albert Dangerfield (1890-1982), and Annette Bricker “Nettie” Dangerfield (1891-1985, wife of Frank Reade Lount). He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 6 June 1923 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
