Memorable Manitobans: Frederick William “Fred” Dangerfield (1888-1959)

Hotelier.

Born at Grafton, North Dakota in 1888, son of George Edward Dangerfield and Jessie Ann Bricker (c1870-1959), he moved with his family to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and, after a short period working with the Bank of Montreal, went into the hotel business with his father. He later enrolled at the Palmer School of Chiropractors at Davenport, Iowa and, after graduation, practiced as a chiropractor in Winnipeg until 1923, when his father became ill and he took over management of the Leland Hotel.

In partnership with his brother James Albert Dangerfield (1890-1982), he formed the Dangerfield Hotel Company and it owned the Leland Hotel (1921-1960s), Clarendon Hotel (1932-1949), McLaren Hotel (1936-1960s), Winnipeg Airport Motor Hotel (1963-?), and Kirkfield Hotel (1949-present). He served the profession as President of the Manitoba Hotel Association, Vice-President of the Western Hotel Association, and a director of the Canadian Hotel Association and American Hotel Association.

He and wife Elizabeth Jackson (?-1973) had four children: Eyleen Elizabeth Dangerfield (1913-2000, wife of Forbes Allison Rankin, mother of Laird Forbes Rankin), George Frederick Dangerfield (1914-1991), John W. “Jack” Dangerfield (1921-1987), and Jessie Annette Dangerfield (1924-2001, wife of Richard Stanley Turpin). The family lived at 543 Lyndale Drive. He was a member of the Khartum Shrine, Masons (Prince Albert Lodge), Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg, and Fellowship Club.

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 11 September 1959 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
