Cleric.
Born at Toronto, Ontario on 27 July 1913, son of Joseph Cooney and Elinor Graham, he was educated at the Holy Name School (Toronto), Kelvin High School, and University of Manitoba, receiving an Arts degree in 1933. He studied Theology at the St. Peter's Seminary in London, Ontario and was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in St. Mary’s Cathedral in 1937.
He served as assistant at St. Mary’s Cathedral (1938-1939) and St. Edward’s Roman Catholic Church (1941-1943), and pastor of St. Joseph the Worker Parish at Russell (1943-1945, 1970-1972), St. Anthony of Padua Parish at West Kildonan (1945-1953), St. Augustine of Canterbury Roman Catholic Church (1953-1970), and St. Theresa’s Parish at Middlechurch (1972-1982). He also served in the Holy Cross Parish at Creston, BC (1937-1938, 1940-1941), chancellor of the Diocese of Nelson (1939-1940), and Chaplain at HMCS Chippewa (1943) and St. Joseph’s Vocational School (1943). He taught at St. Paul’s High School (1945-1946) and was Dean of Brandon (1953-1970). In recognition of his service, he was appointed a Domestic Prelate by Pope Paul VI (1966) and received an honorary doctorate from Brandon University (1973).
He died at the Health Sciences Centre on 18 February 1982 and was buried in the Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery.
