Memorable Manitobans: Christiana Elizabeth “Chris/Christine” Carson (1906-1988)
Born in Norwood on 31 December 1906, one of three children of Janie Miller (1871-1948) and butcher Samuel Carson (1877-1940), she was educated in Norwood and the University of Manitoba. She taught senior mathematics at Teulon School, Selkirk School (c1931-1933), Portage Collegiate (1933-1941), and St. James Collegiate (1941-1951), and was director of the Glee Club at St. James. She served as Vice-Principal of the newly opened St. James Collegiate (1952-1959) and retired as Assistant Superintendent of the St. James School Division. Active in musical circles, she was a member of the Young Women’s Music Club Choir and several Anglican church choirs. She was an active member of the Manitoba Opera Association, University Women’s Club, All Saints Anglican Church, and the Winnipeg Club of Zonta International. She died unmarried on 12 August 1988.
