Memorable Manitobans: Kenneth Owen “Ken” Wylie (1920-2009)

Physician.

Born at Transcona on 6 December 1920, son of Francis Marion Wylie and Louisa Hughes, he studied Paediatrics then had a private practice (1952-1953) before doing a residency at the St. Boniface Hospital (1953-1954). He was Assistant Chief Resident at the Children's Hospital (1954-1957) then in a private practice (1957-1981). He was also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Manitoba (1957-1982).

He was President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1973-1974), a Fellow of the Canadian Paediatrics Society (1969-2009), President of the Canadian Medical Association (1978-1979), a member of the medical advisory committee for the Correctional Services of Canada (1980-1989), Medical Director (1964-1972) and medical staff member (1964-1997) at St. Amant Centre, and a member of the staff at St. Boniface Hospital (1952-1991) and Children's Hospital (1957-1981). He was Medical Director to the provincial government's medical panel for the Income Security Division (1980-1989).

In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977) and Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002).

He was married twice, first on 15 August 1942 to Gertrude Eleanor “Grace” Emek (1922-2011) at Winnipeg and they had three sons and two daughters before separating. In the 1970s, the family lived at 66 East Gate. He was a member of the Southwood Golf and Country Club. His second wife was nurse Helen Kelly (1916-2016).

He died at Winnipeg on 87 June 2009.
