Memorable Manitobans: Gladwyn Lyle Scott (1932-2022)

Educator, sports administrator.

Born at Hamiota on 28 January 1932, eldest of six children of James Chester “Jim” Scott and Merle Floretta Richardson (1906-1967), he attended McConnell School and Strathclair School before graduating from the Manitoba Normal School (1951). He received BEd (1965) and MEd (1977) degrees from the University of Manitoba. He taught at Foxwarren School (?-?), Cardale School (1952-1953), Hamiota School (?-?), and Carman School (1961-1962). He was the Superintendent of Souris Valley School Division (13 years) and Interlake School Division (8 years). He was made a life member of the Manitoba Association of School Superintendents.

He was involved in various sports as a player, coach, and administrator. He co-founded the Manitoba High School Athletic Association in 1962 and the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997. He served as President of Hockey Manitoba and Baseball Manitoba.

In 1961, he married Marguerite and they had two daughters and two sons. In recognition of his community service, he was inducted to the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (1992), Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame (1998), Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame (2003), Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame (2008), Manitoba High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame (2012), and Brandon University Wall of Fame. He also received a 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation Medal (1993), Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002), and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012).

He died on 25 August 2022 and was buried in the Carberry Plains Cemetery.
