Memorable Manitobans: Kathleen Violet Harkins “Kay” Sample (1922-2018)

Educator.

Born at Grahamdale on 5 July 1922, daughter of John Wilson Harkins (c1879-1958) and Rebecca Jane Moore (c1887-1969), she grew up and attended grade school at a rural one-room schoolhouse in the Interlake prior to attending high school at Stonewall School. She graduated from the Central Normal School and began a career in education, teaching at Neighborhood School (?-?), Ashern School (1943-1944, Principal), Elkhorn School (1944-1945), Rapid City School (1946), Baldur School (1946-1947), and Erickson School (1947). On 11 October 1947, she married Kenneth Ross “Ken” Sample (c1921-2001, son of T. C. Sample) at St. Paul’s United Church in Brandon. They took up residence at Rapid City and raised a family of six children. She returned to her teaching career in 1964, teaching English at Rapid City High School and Elton Collegiate, during which period she attained a BA degree (1974) from Brandon University via summer and evening courses. She retired in 1983. Following her husband’s death in 2001, she moved to Victoria, British Columbia where she died on 23 May 2018. Her body was returned to Manitoba for burial in the Rapid City Cemetery.
