Memorable Manitobans: Charlotte Mass (1905-1972)

Educator.

Born in Russia in 1905, daughter of Rose Arkin (1878-1970) and Philip Mass (1879-1943), she came to Canada with her family in 1906. She taught at Somerset School (1928-1942) then was a demonstration teacher at the Central Normal School. She served as Principal of Florence Nightingale School (1944-1945), David Livingstone School (1947-1954), Dufferin School (1954-1961), and Brock-Corydon School (1961-1970). She retired in 1970.

Active in many professional and service organizations, she was a member of the Manitoba Historical Society, Jewish Historical Society, Friendship Council of the National Jewish Council, Lillian Friedman Chapter of Hadassah, Friends of the Hebrew University, Delta Kappa Gamma, Manitoba Teachers’ Society, Manitoba Centennial Corporation, Women Principals’ Club, and Sharon Home. In 1967, in recognition of outstanding community service, she received a Centennial Medal.

She died at the Misericordia Hospital on 30 November 1972 and was buried in the Rosh Pina Memorial Park.
