Formerly located on Shaughnessy Street between Pritchard and Manitoba avenues in Winnipeg, a one-storey dark red brick and Tyndall stone school, measuring 60 feet by 143.5 feet, was designed by local architects James Bertram Mitchell and John Nelson Semmens. It was built in 1920 by the Sutherland Construction Company at a cost of about $40,000. Named for nurse Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the five-classroom structure was intended as the first phase of an eventual 16-room school. Given the close proximity of the Canadian Pacific Railway shops, it was assumed that children of railway workers would fill the school.

By 1922, it accommodated 211 students under the guidance of five teachers. In 1929, a one-storey brick addition measuring 33 feet by 56 feet was designed by local architect John Hamilton Gordon Russell. It was built by the Malcom Construction Company, with plumbing and heating subcontracted to Cotter Brothers Limited, at a cost of about $15,000. It added a sixth classroom. Between 1949 and 1950, a one-storey addition to the south side, designed by local architect William Anderson Martin, and built at a cost of about $75,000, added four more classrooms and brought the school up to ten classrooms. The new wing opened officially on 1 March 1950.

From September to February during the 1951-1952 school year, classes for the under-construction Shaughnessy Park School were also held here until they transferred over after its opened.

By June 2002, the building needed renovations that the Winnipeg School Board was unwilling to undertake, so the school closed, at which time its enrollment was 125 students. They were transferred to Lord Nelson School or Shaughnessy Park School. The former school building was demolished in early 2003 and private residences were built on the site.
