Memorable Manitobans: Lawrence Paul Huska (1936-2022)

Educator.

Born at Norquay, Saskatchewan on 10 July 1936, son of Anna and Dmytro Huska, his family moved to Hyas, Saskatchewan where he received a primary education before attending St. Joseph’s High School at Yorkton, Saskatchewan. After teaching on permit for a year at Mafeking School, he attended the Manitoba Normal School (1955-1956) and later the University of Manitoba, receiving BA and BEd degrees.

He taught at Eastdale School (1956-1957) then spent the next 34 years teaching at the high school level at Oakbank High School (Principal, 1957-1959), Springfield Collegiate (1959-1964), and McCreary Collegiate (Principal, 1964-1966). He continued teaching at River East Collegiate (1966-1973) then spent 20 years as Head of the English Department at Kildonan East Regional Secondary School until retirement in 1993.

In 1957, he married Doreen Alice Pash at Binscarth and they subsequently had three children. He served as President of the Manitoba Fly Fishers Association, President of the Crossroads Toastmasters, President of the Transcona New Democratic Party, and coach of the River East Collegiate “Reach for the Top” team that, in 1971, won the national championship.

He died at Winnipeg on 2 January 2022.
