Memorable Manitobans: Harvey Edgar Hedley (1926-2014)
Born at Minneapolis, Minnesota on 28 April 1926, son of Percival Edgar “Percy” Hedley (1897-1984) and Aleta Gertrude Irvine (1895-1976, widow of James Shier Kirk), his very early years were spent at Minneapolis and Sheboygan before, in 1929, his family returned to Hamiota. He graduated from United College and the University of Manitoba (1956, Social Work).
He taught at Winnipegosis School (?-?), Gimli Public School (1946-1948), and Roland School (?-?), and was Principal of McConnell School (1951-1952) and Manitoba Home for Boys School (1954-1955). Next, he worked at Winnipeg within the Juvenile and Family Court system before returning to the classroom with the Winnipeg School District at Isaac Newton School (1959-1960) and General Wolfe School (1960-1966), and R. B. Russell High School (1966-1969), later also teaching at Peguis First Nation. Outside of Manitoba, he also taught in Alberta at Black Diamond and Cayley.
In November 1959, he married Marion Jean Lowry at Rosedale United Church and they had four children. He died at High River, Alberta on 21 June 2014.
