Memorable Manitobans: Arni Gundi Eggertson (1896-1969)

Lawyer.

Born at Winnipeg on 10 January 1896, son of Icelandic immigrants Árni Eggertsson and Oddny Jonina Jacobsdottir (1874-1918), he received a law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1921. He was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1921 and to the Saskatchewan Bar in 1922. He practiced law at Wynyard, Saskatchewan until his return to Winnipeg in 1939. He acted as General Agent and Director of the Icelandic Steamship Company, Vice-President and Director of the North Canadian Trust Company, President of the North American Publishing Company, and Secretary-Treasurer and Director of the Founders Acceptance Corporation. He was appointed a King's Counsel in 1939.

He was married twice, first on 12 October 1920 to Maja Laxdal (1898-1967, sister of Jon Kristinn Laxdal) in the RM of Bifrost with who he subsequently had two sons and two daughters, and second to Bonita ?. He was a member of the Masons (Capitol Lodge No. 136), Khartum Shriners, Manitoba Club, and Carleton Club. He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 7 March 1969 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
