Memorable Manitobans: Francis Frederick Carruthers (1884-1981)

Financial broker.

Born at Winnipeg on 4 April 1884, son of Francis Henry Galt Carruthers (1853-1883) and Adelaide Williams (?-?), nephew of George F. Carruthers, he was educated at St. John’s College (Winnipeg). He commenced a career in his father’s loan and insurance office (Canadian West Fire Insurance Company). From 1907 to 1909 he was in charge of the Winnipeg office of J. & J. Taylor of Toronto. He then started his own financial brokerage agency of Carruthers and Company.

On 18 October 1911, he married Margaret Helen Aird (1884-1981), daughter of John Aird. They had a daughter, Barbara Frances Carruthers (1913-2008). He was a member of the Winnipeg Rowing Club’s four-oared crew that won the Stewards Cup at Henley, England in 1910. He was a member of the Winnipeg Rowing Club (1903-1914), Adanac Club, Kiwanis Club, St. Charles Country Club, Norwood Golf Club, Pine Ridge Golf Club, and Anglican Church. He served as a councillor for the Municipality of St. Vital.

He died at Winnipeg on 22 June 1981 and was buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery.
