Memorable Manitobans: Edith Sophia McKillop Bethel (1904-2001)Educator. Born at Napinka on 18 July 1904, daughter of Edith Mary Moore (1876-1970) and John McKillop (1866-1957), she lived at Souris (1911) and trained at Brandon to become a teacher. Her career included work in Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Manitoba, among which was teaching at Golden Bay School (1937-1938), Beausejour School (1938-1942), Donald McLeod School (1943-1944), Kimberley School (1945-1946, Beausejour School District), Lockport School (1946, Principal), and Poplar Park School (1950), after which she joined the staff of the East Kildonan School District and taught at Salisbury School (1951-1952), Lord Wolseley School (1952-1958), and Polson School (1963-1967). On 2 December 1939, she married James Henry “Jim” Bethel (1911-1979) at Winnipeg. They had no children. She died at Oakview Place in Winnipeg on 28 September 2001 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery. Sources:1911 Canada census, Automated Genealogy.
