Memorable Manitobans: Joyce Elaine Newfield Alexander (?-2014)

Educator.

Daughter of George Melvin Newfield and Margaret Newfield (c1905-1971), she spent 33 years as a teacher in the Winnipeg School Division, serving at Ralph Brown School, Montcalm School, Alexandra School, Sargent Park School, and John M. King School. She was the Principal of Clifton School from 1971 to retirement in 1983. She was a member of the Canadian College of Teachers, Manitoba Association of School Principals, Altrusa Club of Winnipeg, University Women’s Club, and the Retired Women Teachers’ Association. Always interested in music, she sang in the Philharmonic Choir, Harstone United Church choir, and Young United Church choir. On 20 August 1949, she married Donald A. Alexander at Winnipeg and they had one child. They divorced in 1961. She died at Winnipeg on 26 November 2014 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
