Memorable Manitobans: Flora May Thompson (1891-1964)

Educator.

Born at Norwood, Ontario on 11 October 1891, daughter of Mary Catherine Humphries (1859-1954) and John Thompson (1855-1924), her family moved to Gladstone in 1904. She attended teacher training and taught in the surrounding region at North Lakeland School (1913-1914), Lakeland School (1915), Rosamond School (1916-1917, Principal), before gaining a position with her hometown school district, thereafter teaching at Gladstone School / Gladstone Elementary School (1918-1961) until retirement.

In celebration of her 47-year teaching career, the Gladstone Town Council proclaimed 29 June 1961 to be Flora May Thompson Day and a party attended by over 350 people was held for her at the William Morton Collegiate auditorium. She was also Secretary-Treasurer of the North Central Teachers’ Association (1950) and the Gladstone Music and Arts Festival (1962).

She died at her family’s Gladstone residence on 20 September 1964 and was buried in the Gladstone Cemetery.
