Memorable Manitobans: William “Bill” Stepaniuk (1933-2018)

Educator, community activist.

Born at Rosa on 20 June 1933, eldest of six children of Stefan Stepaniuk (1904-1955) and Katyryna Kohut (1912-1994), he had a 36-year teaching career, beginning in one-room schoolhouses such as River Ranch School (1955-1957), Three Sisters School (1957-1958), and Senkiw School (1958-1959). He later taught in schools near Alonsa and Narcisse, and was Principal of the North Springfield School District, before moving to Winnipeg in 1966 where he taught at Arthur Day Junior High School until retirement in 1989. He then worked as a bookkeeper for the family landscaping business. On 20 June 1959, he married Elsie Evanchyshin (1939-2004) and they had three children. He was a long-time member of Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian National Federation. In 2016, he was recognized by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress for his work in the local Ukrainian community. He died at Winnipeg on 18 October 2018 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
