Memorable Manitobans: Douglas Moncreiff Stanes (1917-2001)

MLA (1958-1959), MLA (1959-1962), MLA (1963-1966), MLA (1966-1969).

Born on 28 February 1917, he was elected to the Manitoba Legislature for the St. James constituency at the 1958 general election, he was re-elected in 1959, 1962, and 1966. He was defeated by Alvin Mackling at the 1969 election.

In 1947, he married Marian Bernice Beech (1913-1991, daughter of Thomas Westwood Beech and Ethel Lillian Beech) of Winnipeg in London, England, having met her in New York while she was working for Sir William Stephenson. They had one son, Rodney W. Stanes (c1954-1988).

He died on 29 April 2001.
