Born at Brandon on 16 August 1946, second son of Glen and Jean Smith, he attended Park School, Brandon Collegiate, and Brandon University (BSc). In 1968, he began a teaching career at Flin Flon and, a year later, he moved to Baldur where he taught at Baldur Collegiate (1969-1976) and Baldur School (1976-1987; Principal 1983-1987). Poor health forced him to retire from full-time teaching but he continued part-time at the Windy Bay Colony School until his death.
