Memorable Manitobans: Alfred Charles “Alf” Selver (1928-2016)

Educator.

Born at Winnipeg on 4 November 1928, son of Sidney Walter Selver (1889-1934) and Liba “Lily” Blitz (c1893-1971), he attended St. John’s High School while working to help support his family en route to graduating from the University of Manitoba with BA (1954) and BPaed (1956) degrees.

He taught at West St. Paul School (1956-1957) and joined the Winnipeg School District as a teacher at David Thompson Junior High School (1959-1967), Principal of Argyle School (1967-1972), Vice-Principal of Aberdeen School (1972-?), and a teacher at R. B. Russell High School (?-1987) until retirement.

While attending teacher training in 1954, he met fellow educator Pauline Georgiana Frances (1930-2011), whom he wed on 18 April 1957 at the First Federated Church of Unitarians. They had three sons.

He died at Winnipeg on 5 April 2016.
