Memorable Manitobans: Douglas Arthur Pollard (1924-2010)

Journalist, businessman.

Born at Winnipeg on 9 March 1924 to Aleta Jean Clara Scarlett (1899-1983) and Wilbur Herman Pollard, he attended Robert H. Smith School and Kelvin High School. He went on to attain a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Manitoba. He then spent a year or so living in Mexico, where he taught English and learned to speak fluent Spanish.

Returning to Winnipeg, he worked for a time as a journalist for the Winnipeg Free Press. In the late 1940s, he lived in England for several years, working as a journalist, teacher, shopkeeper, and various other jobs. While in Britain, he met Emily Maud “Lee” Reece (1928-1987). They were married in 1950 in Brighstone, Isle of Wight, England, and went on to have two children. In 1952, they moved back to Winnipeg and he took a job in sales at the family printing company, Saults and Pollard.

He also became very involved with the establishment of a Winnipeg branch of Junior Achievement (JA Manitoba), which works to foster business and entrepreneurial skills in high school students. As a founding member of the branch, he was later presented with a special award for his work with the organization. He was also an active volunteer with many other causes over the years, including the Junior Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Liberal Party of Manitoba, and Meals on Wheels. He was a regular blood donor for many years, making over 75 donations.

After the death of his wife Lee in 1987, he married Anne Margaret Ronald King (1924-2012) in 1990. They both retired from their jobs that year, allowing them time for active involvement with the Navy League, of which Anne was a member as a veteran of the Navy from the Second World War; travel in Canada, the United States, and Europe; and regular attendance at the theatre, opera, and symphony.

He died at Winnipeg on 13 January 2010.
