Memorable Manitobans: Frank Bennett Pearson (1926-2009)

Physician, psychiatrist.

Born at Toronto, Ontario on 19 April 1926, son of Frank Willson Pearson (1882-1961) and Mary Alma Jane Bennett (1892-1993), he attended the Manitoba Medical College and received a medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1950.

He had a family medical practice with his first wife until her death in 1960. He carried on alone until 1967 when he decided pursue an interest in Psychiatry, receiving a degree in it in 1971. He began practicing at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre, becoming in time its Clinical Director, President of Medical Staff, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, and a chief negotiator for government employed physicians. He retired in 1988 and had a private practice at Selkirk until final retirement in 2002. He served as President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1981-1982) and a board member of the Canadian Medical Association (1982-1983).

He was married twice, first on 7 July 1951 to physician Marian Ruth Mathers and they had three children, including Janice Lyn Pearson (1952-1974) and Paul Pearson (1958-2006). The family lived at 457 Kingston Crescent. His second wife was nurse Muriel Millicent Edmonds (1936-1981) and they had a child. The family had a summer cottage at Lester Beach. He was a member of the Fort Garry Horse as a Major and Medical Officer.

He died at Winnipeg on 28 March 2009.
