Educator.
Born at Miami on 27 March 1928, eldest of five daughters to Fanny Elizabetth Acaster and Gordon Wesley Madill, she attended Altamont School through grade 10, finished her grade 12 at United College (1947), graduated from the Manitoba Teachers’ College (1948, Honours), and later attained a BA degree (1977).
She began a teaching career working on permit in rural Manitoba, at Excelsior School (1945-1946) and Sylvan School (1948-1949). In 23 September 1949, she married Edward Harold “Eddie/Ed” Orchard (c1919-2015) and they had a son and a daughter.
Having raised her family, she returned to the classroom in 1967, as a part-time Principal Relief (1967-1968) at Miami Elementary School, after which she was Teaching-Principal of Altamont School (1969-1980), before returning to Miami Elementary School (1980-1991) as a classroom and resource teacher. Semi-retired in 1991, she was a substitute teacher over the following decade, fully retiring in 2001 having shared her final year in the classroom with her daughter at Miami Elementary School (2000-2001). Her permit teaching experience was included in Louisa Josephine Wiebe Loeb’s Manitoba Permit Teachers of World War II (2007).
She died at the Boundary Trails Hospital near Winkler on 19 January 2021 and was buried in the Altamont Cemetery.
