Memorable Manitobans: Simon “Cy” Nimchuk (1933-2020)


Born on 9 September 1933, son of Peter Nimchuk (1903-1959) and Josephine “Jennie” Yanchuk (1908-1992), he was raised on the family farm at Hazelridge. After attending the Manitoba Teachers' College, his first teaching assignment was at Beatrice School (1955-1956). He later taught at Donald School (1956-1957) and was the Principal of Minnetonka School (1969-1970), Lavallee School (1969-1971), Windsor School (1972-1978), Dr. D. W. Penner School (1981-?), and Darwin School (?-1989). He retired in 1989. He was married to Sophie Margaret Nichlosky (1933-2019) and had five children. He played the accordion with several bands, including Jack Findlay and the Night Riders and The Western Canadians, at dances, weddings, and other events around Manitoba. He was active with the St. Vital Rotary Club, St. Anne's Church, Victoria Beach Senior Scene, and St. Saviour's Church. He died at Winnipeg on 27 October 2020.
