Memorable Manitobans: Harold John Neufeld (1927-2025)

Accountant, MLA (1988-1990), MLA (1990-1993).

Born at Altona in 1927, one of five children of Isaac Neufeld (1892-1982) and Agatha Epp (1901-1996), his family moved to Winnipeg in 1939. After receiving an education, he worked as a chartered accountant.

After being defeated as a Progressive Conservative candidate for Rossmere in the 1986 provincial general election, he was elected in 1988 and 1990. He served as Minister of Energy and Mines (1988-1992), Minister Responsible for the Manitoba Hydro Act (1988-1992), and Minister Responsible for Seniors (1988-1989). He resigned on 12 May 1993.

On 7 July 1951, he married Verdeen Marian Scott (daughter of Thomas L. Scott) at the Mennonite Brethren Church at 343 Edison Avenue in North Kildonan. They had two daughters. The family lived at 38 Rossmere Crescent (circa 1963).

He died on 12 July 2025.
