Memorable Manitobans: Harvey Lawrence McNicol (1911-1989)

Physician.

Born at Wadena, Saskatchewan on 28 November 1911, son of Duncan McNicol, he moved to WInnipeg and attended the Manitoba Medical College, receiving an MD degree from the University of Manitoba in 1935. He interned at the Winnipeg General Hospital and held a senior residence post there until 1938.

A general practice at Flin Flon, established in 1938, was interrupted by service in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the Second World War. He was attached to the No. 5 Canadian General Hospital with the rank of Major. In 1946, he received a certification in surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. While at Flin Flon, he was doctor to the town’s junior hockey team. After returning to WInnipeg, he worked at the Workmen's Compensation Board (1964-1973), retiring in the latter year due to ill health.

He was President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1960-1961) and was made a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (1960-1961).

He was married twice, first on 11 June 1938 to Mary Irene Duncan (1909-1939, niece of Robert Fletcher Argue) at East Kildonan. On 29 February 1944, he married Evelyn Doris Gregory (?-1989) at Winnipeg. He had two sons and two daughters. He served as President of the Flin Flon Boy Scouts Association and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Flin Flon Rotary Club, Winnipeg Rotary Club, and St. Andrews United Church.

He died at Winnipeg on 10 July 1989 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
