Born in Quebec in 1871, son of David Graham McBain and Hannah Ross, he was educated in Winnipeg schools then worked with his brother William G. McBain on his ranch at Netley Lake. After nine years, he returned to the family homestead at Winnipeg where he engaged in gardening and real estate.
