Memorable Manitobans: Ruvin Lyons (1906-1992)

Physician.

Born on 15 October 1906, he received an MD degree from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, England and did postgraduate studies at Queen Mary’s and Southend hospitals in London.

He practiced Obstetrics and Gynaecology for nearly 50 years, as a founding member of the Mall Medical Group, at the Winnipeg General Hospital and Misericordia General Hospital, and was an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Manitoba. During the Second World War, he was a senior medical officer with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps based at Kentville and Halifax in Nova Scotia. He was known for his kindness and dedication to his patients.

He was President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1954-1955), a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a member of the American College of Surgeons and International College of Surgeons. He was a senior member of the Canadian Medical Association.

On 29 September 1940, he married Edith Ethel Hecht (1916-2009) at Winnipeg and they had a son and a daughter. He was made a life member of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue (1983), having played several roles on its board and as President (1969-1970).

He died at Winnipeg on 5 August 1992 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
