Memorable Manitobans: Michael “Mike” Leung (1927-2016)

Educator.

Born at Stenen, Saskatchewan on 28 February 1927, one of six children of Choy Leung (c1889-1968) and Winnifred Wowrow (1904-1996), his family moved to Swan River in 1933 where his parents operated a laundry business.

After graduating from high school in 1945, he became a permit teacher and taught at Lancaster School (1945-1946). After completing his pedagogical education at Normal School, he had a 39-year teaching career, including a Principalship at West St. Paul School (1949-1952) and teaching at Swan River School (1955-1960) and Swan River Collegiate (1960-1967). He acquired BA and BEd degrees by correspondence and summer school. He was the Vice-Principal (1972-?) and Principal (?-?) of the Swan Valley Regional Secondary School prior to retirement.

In 1951, he married nurse Lorna Aileen McIntosh (1930-2017) and they had five children. He was active in the Royal Canadian Legion (President and zone commander, hall committee board member, and Captain of the 519 Air Cadet Squadron). He was a Board member of the Teachers’ Retirement Allowances Fund (1967-1974). In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977).

He died at the family cottage on Wellman Lake on 22 August 2016.
