The Swan River School District was organized formally in February 1900 in what is now the Town of Swan River. The following month, tenders were requested for construction of a two-storey, four-classroom school building designed by architect Joseph Henry Bossons. The building had become inadequate for needs by 1912 so, a two-storey, six-classroom brick school building, designed by Winnipeg architect Eldred Dodsworth Tuttle, was built at a cost of about $24,000. The original building was dismantled. In 1953, the building was named Duncan School in commemoration of John Smith Duncan who served as its Principal from 1917 to 1933. The building was destroyed by fire on 29 July 1976, in a suspected case of arson.

The two-storey Taylor Elementary School building was constructed between 1950 and 1951, immediately east of the Swan River School (Duncan School), by Winnipeg contractor Frank Sawatsky at a cost of about $80,000. Its name commemorates early teacher Robert Gardner Taylor. The structure contained nine classrooms and an auditorium, and was designed to accommodate grades 1 to 6. After the Duncan School building was destroyed, an addition was built on Taylor School, containing four classrooms, library, offices, and gymnasium.

A monument, topped by the former school bell, contains three commemorative plaques and the name plate from the building. One recognizes John Smith Duncan. A second, dedicated on 22 July 1983, commemorates Duncan School that stood near here from 1912 to 1976. The third plaque recognizes students and teachers of the school who were killed during military service during the First World War and Second World War.
