Historical Glossary: Permit Teacher

A common occurrence in the early- to mid-20th century, when trained teachers were in short supply, a person could obtain a permit to teach for a short period of time, usually less than a year, after attending several weeks of instruction at a Normal School. If they wished to continue teaching, they would be required to reenter the Normal School and complete the regular course of instruction.
