Louis Marcel Lenz

Professor, horticulturist.
Born on a farm near Bede on 30 May 1933, one of three children of Louis Henry Lenz (1890-1961) and Maymie Irene Grose (1902-1966), brother of newspaper publisher August W. Lenz, he attended Bede School before his family moved to Brandon in 1952. He graduated from the Brandon Collegiate (1953), then received a BSc degree from Brandon College (1957), a BSA degree from the University of Manitoba (1960), and an MSc degree in Horticulture from Ohio State University (1963).
He taught courses in Horticulture at the University of Manitoba for 31 years until retirement in 1995 and developed the Pink Beauty and Mango Tango cultivars of Potentilla bushes, among others. He served on the Planning Committee of the International Peace Garden, was a founding member of the Friends of Assiniboine Park Conservatory, and was an active member of the Western Canadian Society for Horticulture and Manitoba Nursery and Landscape Association. He was Chairman of the Prairie Garden Editorial Committee for nine years. He was President of the Winnipeg Horticultural Society, Treasurer of the Manitoba Regional Lily Society, and a board member of the Manitoba Greenhouse Growers Association. In his spare time, he enjoyed nature photography and model railroading.
In recognition of his contributions to Manitoba horticulture, he received a University of Manitoba Outreach Award (1986), a Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Campbell Outreach Award (1990), and a Stevenson Commemorative Award from the Manitoba Horticultural Association (2010). He was made an honorary life member of the Canadian Society for Horticultural Science (2000).
He died unmarried at Winnipeg on 13 August 2024.
