Lawyer, community activist.
Born at Sokal, Ukraine on 23 July 1943 to Iwan and Jaroslawa Iwanchuk, he immigrated with his parents to Canada in 1948, and settled in Winnipeg. He graduated from Sisler High School, and later from the University of Manitoba with BA (1965) and LLB (1968) degrees. He began his professional career as a Crown attorney for the Province of Manitoba, and later became a defense lawyer. He was honoured with the title of Queen’s Counsel in 1996. He continued to practice law for over 40 years.
He was active in the Ukrainian community. In his youth he was a member of the Plast National Scout Organization of Ukraine, and served on the executive of the Ukrainian Canadian Students Union (SUSK). Later he was a member of the Osvita Foundation, the Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre, and the Ukrainian Professional and Business Foundation. He also served on the civil liberties committee of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. In 2004, he was selected by the Canadian government to monitor the free democratic election in Ukraine. With his wife Irene Karpiak he had two sons, including Ilyan Vitali Iwanchuk (1974-2023).
He died at Winnipeg on 4 June 2009 and was buried in the All Saints Cemetery.
