Memorable Manitobans: James Selby Henderson (1878-1957)

Born at Winnipeg on 18 July 1878, son of James Henderson and Jane Black (1849-1920, he attended Carlton School and the Winnipeg Collegiate Institute. He joined the family business of Henderson Directories Limited and, in 1918, succeeded his father as its President, holding the position until his death.

He married Elaine Pigott (1887-1969, daughter of Herbert H. Pigott) and they had two children: Elaine Henderson (1913-1985, wife of David W. Evans) and Selby Roger Henderson (1918-1940). Active in many sports, he played football, snowshoed, raced automobiles, and was a duck hunter. His major sport was rowing and he competed in many local regattas, at the Canadian national regatta, and on two occasions at the Royal Henley regatta in England. He was a member of the Winnipeg Rowing Club, Manitoba Club, and Masons (Ancient Landmark Lodge).

He died at his Winnipeg home, 1215 Wellington Crescent, on 10 December 1957.
