Memorable Manitobans: Harold Stuart Hamilton Evans (1904-1992)

Physician and surgeon.

Born at Winnipeg on 30 December 1904, son of architect Frank Robert Evans and Margaret Hamilton (1869-1948), he received a medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1928. After completing a surgical residency at the Winnipeg General Hospital, he practiced at Mayo Landing, Yukon from 1930 to 1932 then studied at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He practiced at Timmins, Ontario (1933-1938) then at Brandon until retirement in 1979.

He was President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1948-1949) and served for many years on the board of the Brandon General Hospital. He was a founding partner of the Brandon Clinic. He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (1957) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (1958).

In 1930, he married nurse Mary Aikin Reid (1904-2003) at Mayo Landing and they had two sons, including Brian Hamilton Evans (1941-2009). He was a member of the Masons (Tweed Lodge No. 113), Khartum Shriners, and Royal Order of Jesters.

He moved to Winnipeg in 1987 and died there on 18 January 1992.
